Fast food restaurants prevail all over the US. It is quite common to see them around every corner, however, their localization is not very much random. According to the recent survey on popular places for eating out, fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King prevail in the poor areas. We can assume that these restaurants negatively affect kids of low-income families. African-American communities are more exposed to the influence of fast food – many kids and young adults of minorities are already obese at the early age due to their nutrition. Apparently, advertising is more targeted at children of color and their parents. At the large scale, food advertising of inner cities is aimed at children, but it is not the same with well-off residential areas.
Nutritionists claim that fast food is a major reason for obesity among inner city residents. People with the lowest income in the country cannot afford themselves to pay for trendy eating behaviors such as home-cooked organic food. This segment of the American population can pay for cheap items like snacks, ready-made food or burgers. Parents hope that tasty fast food provides enough calories for children to stay active, but apparently children cannot burn all these calories with their sedentary lifestyle. Healthy eating is frequently a luxurious item for low-income families, and fast food chains are perfectly aware of this fact.
Nutrition is always a problem for American people. Some of them live on food stamps to assure at least the basic nutrition, while another consume calories which come in an excess. Food companies and restaurants are usually oriented at those population segments which can afford their products.
