There is no regulation that prohibits therapists from staying in touch with their clients between sessions. Every psychologists has their own opinion in this respect; some of them prefer to give their telephone number, the others – e-mail address and social network account. The most cautious therapists believe they should never let patients access them in any other way than at the sessions. And each of them shall decide which variant of interaction with clients is the most appropriate for them.

Communication per e-mail and personal messages on social networks may look appealing to psychologists who need their clients to stay neither too far nor too close. Online communication is possible only if both people have time and are ready to interact. It may be just perfect for therapists not to be bothered by phone calls at night or anytime they are busy. They can easily check an inbox in their free time, look through questions of concerned clients, and give a short feedback. Surely, Facebook communication cannot replace treatment sessions, but it is vital if patients need to ask  their therapists a question as soon as possible. And clients shall have some opportunity to contact their doctor if it is urgent.

Certainly, therapists do not need (and have no opportunity) to respond to the messages of their clients immediately. They shall check an inbox for requests of their patients once or twice a day to make sure that the clients do not feel abandoned. Actually, many clients do not expect their therapists to spend much time communicating with them off the sessions.
