Carbon dioxide is the major contributor to the global warming we observe today. Burning fossil fuels, we accumulate greenhouse gasses in the upper layers of the atmosphere, deplete the ozone layer, and accelerate the solar radiation that reaches the surface of our planet. The only way to normalize average temperature on the earth is to cut down the carbon emissions almost entirely. It is the main reason why ecologists are so hopeful about the alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear power.
Solar and wind power are, perhaps, the most prospective renewable sources of energy. Today wind power makes up about 3 percent of the electricity produced in the world. It still concedes hydropower with its 17 percent, however, the production of wind power is growing fast. The Wind is an effective renewable source of energy which generates electricity being processed with the help of wind turbines. Wind power is less expensive than solar one and wind turbines are comparatively easy to construct. Wind facilities are situated all over the US and take comparatively small land and do not prevent agricultural activity, raising livestock or building highways. Turbines are friendly to animals and humans, however, sometimes birds can collide with the turbine blades. Wind power facilities are safe to human health, though, people living nearby sometimes complain about the noise generated by the turbines.
The quick rise in the production of wind energy soon will allow the US to replace a lot of carbon emitting power stations, and this is the first step to combating global warming. It is necessary to integrate the renewable energy and wind power in particular into the electric grid up to the year 2050 in order to retain the environmental destruction caused by carbon dioxide emitted by power stations running on fossil fuels.
