Patriot Act essay sample

USA PATRIOT stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism act of 2001. It is an Act of Congress that has been signed by George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. President Barack Obama signed PATRIOT Sunsets Extension Action of 2011 on May 26, 2011. It is a four-year extension regarding three key provisions: search of business records, roving wiretaps and conducting surveillance of the so-called lone wolves. Those are individuals who are suspected of terrorist-related activities. Yet, they have not been linked to any terrorist organizations or groups.

The main goal of this act is to stop and punish terrorist attacks in the United States of America as well as all over the world. The idea is to strengthen the measures so that to prevent and detect financing of terrorism; to get reports about potential money laundering which requires all elements of financial services to cooperate; to prevent the use of the financial system in various terrorism schemes; to scrutinize foreign institutions and jurisdictions in relation to the cases of criminal abuse.
