The Electoral College system is frequently criticized lately. Critics suppose that the standard which has been established about 200 years does not fit in the modern realities and shall be abolished in favor of the elections directly performed by voters. However, the system has its defenders who put a stress on the Electoral College being useful for the distribution of popular support and minority interests as well as for maintaining a two-party system and the federal system of government.
Hypothetically, it could be more effective if the president were directly elected by voters. Nevertheless, the Electoral College usually solves problems which will be inevitable if the president were chosen by the popular vote. To be more precise, winning the popular vote can be achieved by candidates concentrating their campaigns in the most-populated states which makes people living in the small states overseen. Consequently, it is necessary to look for another way to make the elections more effective.
No doubt, it is quite discouraging to know that the vote of every single individual is not counted at the presidential elections, and it makes some citizens to ignore elections. Nevertheless, it is highly important that more American citizens vote in the elections as it is the only way of getting the fair picture about the decision of the majority – the only one which matters under the current electoral system.
